What is Massage Therapy?
Massage therapy is a form of bodywork that involves soft tissue manipulation. Licensed massage therapists can treat various conditions, including muscle pain and tension, stress, stiffness, arthritis, circulation problems, and general well-being.
Massages can prevent injuries by improving muscle strength, flexibility, and coordination. It also reduces stress and anxiety by lowering cortisol levels in the body.
Unlike most doctor's offices, massage rooms tend to have low lighting and soothing music. The massage therapist uses oils or lotions on the client's skin during treatment to improve elasticity and increase circulation. If needed, special stretching techniques are employed to relieve muscle tension and pain.
Benefits of Massage Therapy
Reduced Stress and Increased Relaxation
One of the most popular benefits of massage therapy is that it reduces tension and anxiety. Massage lowers levels of stress hormones such as cortisol, which can cause numerous physical and mental ailments. It also results in feelings of calmness or relaxation for the patient.
Reduced Pain and Muscle Soreness
The benefits of massage go beyond simple relaxation. Research has shown that massages can help relieve aches and muscle soreness, improve sleep, and lower blood pressure. Studies have shown that massage therapy may be as effective as painkillers in treating lower back pain.
Lowered Heart Rate and Blood Pressure
Massage therapy may lower the heart rate and blood pressure of people with chronic conditions like heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes.
A massage doesn't just feel good-- it can also improve your health and help you find relief from symptoms of a health condition or pain relief. The benefits of massage and bodywork include both physical and psychological effects, including:
Improved Circulation, Energy, and Alertness
Enjoy a greater sense of energy and alertness from regular bodywork. Massage therapy can boost blood flow and enhance circulation. If you have trouble sleeping, a sports massage improves the quality of your deep sleep, allowing you to wake up more rested and alert.
Improved Immunity
Studies have shown that massage therapy can improve immunity by reducing stress hormones and increasing levels of natural killer cells.
Improved Quality of Life
Massage therapy can be a fantastic way to pamper yourself and relax your mind and body. In addition, studies have shown that massage therapy can reduce fatigue, alleviate anxiety, and treat depression.

FAQs
How long should a massage be?
Massages are usually about an hour long but can vary depending on what kind of massage you're getting and the massage technique requested.
The best way to decide what's suitable for you is by talking with the therapist about how long they think a session should last, depending on your needs. A 50-minute massage is a popular option among our clients.
How often should you have a massage?
The answer depends on your health goals and the condition of your body. For example, patients dealing with chronic back pain fibromyalgia will need more attention. In such a case, it may be advisable for you to have one massage every week (if not more) and adjust as you heal.
The American Massage Therapy Association recommends at least five yearly massages for general wellness.
For frequent tension or stiffness in the neck and shoulders, a proper protocol is 15-60 minutes of massage therapy twice per week for three to eight weeks.
Are massages helpful for scar tissue?
Yes, massages help improve scar tissue appearance. For example, the tissue area will be more flexible with regular massage therapy. As the scar heals, it will become softer and less noticeable.
